Artist Statement
Spirituality melds with expressionism, emotions engage and archetypes emerge. Mark must paint—to heal himself and those moved by his work.
Collective life experience - living positively through the impact of spirituality, film, literature, food, art, nature, world travel, twindom and community building while surviving corporate America, cancer, coming out as a gay man following childhood clergy sexual abuse and through it all celebrating family - influences Mark’s work engaging myriad emotions.
Vivid color and radiant light create dynamic movement rich with wistful detail and ever-increasing depth - revealing truly intuitive painting. Spirit energy manifests while open vision permeates. Plein air landscapes emphasize luminous skies creating an ethereal feel. Composition, sculpture, art history and theatre design provide structure.
Use of varied materials on stretched or paneled canvas, shaped by historical techniques, enables under-laid acrylics, metal leaf and natural crystals to illuminate and texture grounds, while utilizing hand-made and commercial oils and mediums. Recent work involves garnets or other crystals that energize, cleanse and re-align, larger canvas and suggestive "spirit" imagery while infusing Reiki healing. On-going research continues to explore materials, methods and practice.
Mark’s artistic achievement lies rooted in his inherent inquisitive nature - exploring life with a child’s zeal free of preconceived ideas.
